Advice for preventing the spread of swine flu

Advice for the prevention of swine flu

With the World Health Organisation raising the pandemic alert level to phase 5 (pandemic imminent – this is not the same as certain, nor does it mean days/weeks), we have been receiving increasing numbers of calls from customers requesting information on which products they should use to keep safe. Many of our customers are particularly vulnerable to the flu virus; particularly children under 5 and elderly people over 65.

How you can prevent the spread of flu amongst your staff and pupils

Helpful resources

Although it is impossible to eliminate the chances of catching swine flu, people can reduce their risk and help slow the spread of the virus. Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that one may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before they know they are sick, as well as while that someone is also sick.

Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

  1. 1.

Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly

This will help slow the spread of the virus and will be the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and others from infection.

  2. 2.

Use alcohol based gel or foam, or hand sanitisers where available

Alcohol-based gel or foam hand rubs can be very effective against viruses and bacteria.

  3. 3.

CATCH IT, BIN IT, KILL IT

Use clean tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Bin the tissues after one use.

  4. 4.

    Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently

Viruses can survive on hard surfaces for two hours or longer; regularly clean & disinfect high touch surfaces such as cafeteria tables, desks, door knobs, light switches, desk tops, restroom fixtures, telephones, door push plates, elevator buttons etc.
